Thomas Samuel Kuhn was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 18 July 1922. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during WWI. After his service, he returned to Cincinnati to help his recently widowed mother. His mother was a native New Yorker from a prominent family. His father was a hydraulic engineer from Cincinnati (Marcum).

In the spring of 1943, Kuhn graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College. After, he worked for Harvard Biology in the Radio Radio research laboratory (Marcum).

After V.E. Day in 1945, Kuhn returned to Harvard and continued his studies, focusing on physics. In 1946, Kuhn passed the general examinations and received a master’s degree in physics (Marcum).

In his book, Kuhn gives science a new turn. This was a series of publications that were finalized in 1970. He provides steps from pre-paradigm science to normal science (Marcum). He presented a new way of doing science that he called paradigm. In his theory, when a new paradigm replaces an older a scientific revolution occurs(Godfrey-Smith 2003 76)
