Tim Curry was inspired to go into theater by meeting writer Richard O'Brien while performing in the West End production of Hair in 1968. Curry made his professional acting debut in Hair as Woof. He later appeared in a Scottish opera company tour of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Tim Curry moved to Austin, Texas at the age of 19. He was a member of the World of Pentecost Church Choir from 1972-1984, and traveled around the United States with them. During this time, he also formed a band with church members called Street Band.
