Mary Lennox was born in 1905 in India. Her parents were distant, and she was cared for by an Indian servant, Kamala.
-
In 1914 an epidemic impacted India. The parents of Mary died, and she was alone in her house.
Mary is sent to England to live with her uncle, Mr. Archibald Craven, at Misselthwaite Manor. -
Mary thought Misselthwaite Manor was a vast, old, and lonely place.
She met Mrs. Medlock, Mary did not like her, and Mrs Medlock did not like Mary either.
Mary also met Martha, a young servant girl. -
Martha told Mary about the secret garden, which was locked "ten years ago" after the wife of Mr. Craven died.
-
It was Spring, the wind and rain disappeared. Mary spent time exploring the gardens and found an old, buried key with the help of a bird.
-
Mary began to work every day secretly in the new plants in the secret garden for almost a week.
During that week she became more friendly with Ben, who was a gardener that initially looked unfriendly but, with the time, looked more friendly when they talked about roses.
She met Dickon, who was the brother of Martha. He was about twelve, with a healthy red face and bright blue eyes, was a kind boy who understood nature and had a great smile. He was playing on a wooden pipe, and also had a horse. -
Mary often heard crying in the house at night. She investigated and followed the sound to a hidden room. Mary discovered her cousin, Colin Craven, who was the son of Mr. Craven. Colin was ten years old. He looked tired and cross, with a thin, white face, also he looked sickly, and believed he was going to die. Colin said Mary that once a famous doctor from London told him to go out in the fresh air and try to get well, but he hates fresh air.
-
When the spring really arrived, Mary, Dickon, and Colin visited the secret garden together, and made a lot of plans to keep their visits as a secret. They were discovered by Ben, the gardener, who answered why they were in that garden, and talked about Colin's crooked back and legs, but Colin made a big effort to stand up and showed him that he can do it. After that, Colin asked Ben to keep it a secret.
-
Mr. Craven has travelled many years to beautiful places, but was very sad in all places. Other people thought he was a man who could not forget a crime or was an insane man. One day, he saw a flower, which made him enjoy life. At that moment, her son was enjoying the life again.
-
One day, he heard the voice of her wife, telling him to return to the garden. Also, he received a letter from the mother of Martha asking him to return home. He decided to return immediately. When Mr. Craven returned, Mrs. Medlock told him that Colin’s looked better, but some days he ate and other days not. Mr. Craven went to the sealed garden, and listened for a moment, he heard happy sounds from the secret garden and suddenly saw a healthy boy running, he was Colin.
