The Second World War Begins

  • Germany Invades Czechoslovakia

    Chamberlain realised that appeasment would no longer work with the Germans when they began the invasion of Czechoslovakia in March of 1939. Taking over Bohemia, they proved that they had broken their promises made in Munich.
  • The Soviet-Nazi Pact

    In April of 1939, 3 powerful countries (France, Britain and Russia) formed a pact to help stop Germany from invading Poland. However in August of the same year, Russia switched sides and made a pact with Nazi Germany. This had a big part in the success of the invasion of Poland.
  • The Invasion of Poland

    The Invasion of Poland
    On September 1, 1939, German Nazi troops invaded Poland, specifically the major city of Warsaw. Within weeks, the Poland army was defeated and the invasion was complete. 1,300 aircraft and 62 German units were involved in the attack. This was one of Germany's first non-peaceful invasions.
  • Canada Enters the War

    Canada entered the war on the 10th of September, 1939. They were summoned to originally help the British Expeditionary Forces (BEF), and also ended up helping to defend Hong Kong and other parts of Japan.

    Using heavy bombing and extremely large and well armed army units, Germany successfully invaded Denmark (April of 1940), Norway (April of 1940), Holland (May 1940) and Belgium (May of 1940), Each of these takeovers marked significant steps in the Nazi's takeover of Europe.

    The Phoney War took place from September 1939 to April 1940. This was one of the early stages of WW2 where nothing of real voilent or military importance occured. Some events that occured was the 'bombing' of thousands of propaganda pamphlets over Germany by the British aircraft, Germans attacked a boat called the ‘Athenia’ and killed 112 of the passengers.
  • The Invasion of France

    On May 10, 1940, Germany began the invasion of France. There was no major damage done, however, until Luftwaffe initiated air raids on the country on June 3rd. The invasion of France was Germany's main goal in this new war in which they were just beginning to start. This invasion destroyed many of France's important art and architectual feats.
  • The Miracle at Dunkirk

    The Miracle at Dunkirk
    Over 300,000 troops were rescued from Dunkirk in May and June of 1940, just before Germans troops were abou to make a catastrophic advance. Not only Navy owned ships, but smaller, privately owned ships helped transport all the troops away from the harbour. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said it was "a miracle of deliverance".
  • The Fall of France

    on June 22nd, after Germany hvd been attacking France since the 10th of May, and Armistice was signed between France and Germany which agreed to give Germany the North and West of their country. France fell primarily because of misconseptions on how Germany would carry out their attack, falsely believing that troops were only coming from Belgium.
  • The Battle of Britain

    Once the Battle of Francec was over, there was nothing stopping Germany from moving to its next target: Britain. However instead of using soilders or the Navy, they fought entirely with air raiding and repeated bombings, hopeing to terrorize the British citizens and government enough to make them surrender. This lasted from July 10th 1940 to the 31st of October 1940.
  • Operation Barbarossa

    Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Germany's secret invasion of the Soviet Union. 4 million German soilders and pilots were summond by Hitler to cross the border into the SOviet Territories, and 95 percent of German Army casualties occured during this invasion. Germans captured over 3 million Soviet Union soilders and starved them to death.
  • The Attack on Pearl Harbour

    The Attack on Pearl Harbour
    The Japanese air force launched a suprise air raid attack on Pearl harbour, an American Naval Base. The result was that 2,400 Americans were dead, 21 ships had been sunk and more than 188 aircrafts were destroyed. This angered Americans so much that by the next day, they declared war of Japan and entered WW2.
