The Road To Revolution

  • (1) The Treaty of Paris 1763

    The treaty ending the Seven Years War. French territories ceded to Spain and Britain with land east of the Mississippi River given to Britain and to the west given to Spain.
  • (2) Proclamation Act

    Prevented further settlement to the west of the Appalachian Mountains to keep costs of defending the colonies lower. This is the first aggression from Great Britain to the Colonies.
  • (3) Sugar Act

    Started to help cover costs of the defense of the Colonies. Also established a Vice Admiralty Court in Halifax, Nova Scotia which was heavily biased.
  • (4) Stamp Act

    Another attempt to cover defensive costs in the Colonies. All legal documents, newspapers, and pamphlets required to be printed on watermarked paper.
  • (5) Quartering Act

    Colonial Assemblies had to pay for supplies for British garrisons. New York assembly said it could not comply.
  • (6) Stamp Act Congress

    Representatives from 9 of the colonies declared the act to be unconstitutional as it was levied without consent.
  • (7) Stamp Act Repeal

    After months of protests and an appeal by Benjamin Franklin the Stamp act was finally appealed.
  • (8) Declaratory Act

    After the repeal of the Stamp Act, British Parliament passes the declaratory act. It declares it can tax the colonies.
  • (9) Townshend Act

    The act places taxes many imported items to the colonies. The taxes from the Townshend Act would go to paying for administration of the colonies.
  • (10) Boston Massacre

    A crowd harassing a group of soldiers was shot at after an accidental discharge sparked the whole group to fire at the crowd killing 5.
  • (11)Committee of Correspondence

    rallied colonial opposition against British policy. Lead to establishing a political union between the 13 colonies.
  • (12) Tea Act

    Parliament exempt tea from import duties which allowed for direct sale of tea to the colonies. Americans saw this as indirect tax subsidising.
  • (13) Boston Tea Party

    American patriots dumped £9,000 dollars worth of tea into the Boston harbor dressed as Mohawk Warriors.
  • (14) Intolerable Acts (May-June)

    Four measures to strip judicial and self-government independence. This lead to a general boycott of British goods by the colonies.
  • (15) 1st Continental Congress

    Colonial Delegates meet in Philadelphia to organize opposition against the Intolerable Acts.
  • (16) Declaration of Rights and Grievances

    Similar to the declaration made in 1765, it asks George III to hear out the colonists and make their lives easier.
  • (17) Lexington and Concord

    First engagement of the Revolutionary War. Minute Men and British troops clash at the towns of Lexington and Concord with warning by Paul Revere,
  • (18) Battle of Bunker Hill

    First major battle of the Revolutionary War. British victory but at a cost of 1054 British soldiers compared to the Americans 367 soldiers.
  • (19) Olive Branch Petition

    A proposal made by Congress for a cease fire for recognition of American rights and end of the Intolerable Acts. George the III rejected the proposal.
  • (20) Common Sense

    A popular book written by Thomas Paine arguing for independence from the British.
  • (21) Declaration of Independence

    The Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence to formerly make the United States of America independent.
