    The first Europeans arrived in America about 1000 AD. They were Vikings led by Leif Erikson, who landed in Vinland. Today's Newfoundland in Canada, but thier settlements did not last.

    Christopher Colombus expedition reached the Americas in 1492. He tried to find a new sea route to Asia, but instead reached the Americas.

    It is estimated that between seven million Natve Americans lived spread out through the continent in different groups. Europeans settlers were responsible for the death of vast numbers trough conflict and disease. They were also dependent on Native Americans skills and knowledge.

    Many plantation owners saw the need for cheap labor, and the first legal slave owner was recognized in 1654. Slaves were a part of the Triangular Trade. The slaves were taken from England to America and then sold.

    Between 1700 and 1800 an estimated 250, 000 slaves were taken to America. It was largely accpeted to own slaves at that time. Indeed, some of the Foundig fathers also owned slaves.

    The US wanted independence the British crown, and wrote the Decleration of independence signed by the "Founding fathers". Among them, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.

    As more people settled in North America and began to develope farms and industry, they began to question wether it was a good idea to be a part of Britian. They decided to declare their independence. In 1776 the colonies signed the Decleration of Independence. The transition to an independent country was not a peacfyl one. It was the beginning of the American independens war.

    In 1789 George washington who was one of the four "Founding Fathers" became the first president in The USA. He served as a president from 1789 - 1797.

    Was betwwen Northern and Southern

    Abraham used his presidency to ensure the freedom of slaves. One of the reasons was because slavery led to civil war between the Northen and Southern states. The North won, and slavery was abolished. Unfortunately Lincoln did not live to see this because he was assassinated in 1865. Slave trade was banned from 1807, but slavery was officiallly abolished in 1865.
