Scientific descovery of elements begins
during this time period, chemists aquired and descovered more knowledge of elements, starting with the descovery of Phosporus, which occured when a scientist was attempting to create the "Philosipher's stone", a rock that can turn any metal into pure Gold. Elements such as Gold, Silver & Tin were already known of, but had not been scientifically noted yet. -
Patterns descovered in elements
during this year, around 47 elements were discovered, and Scientists began to see patterns in their characteristics -
First grouping of elements
John Newlands, an English chemist arranges the 57 descovered elements into 11 groups. -
the Periodic Table is born
Dimitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist, started to arrange elements by their atomic mass. he left spaces open for elements that he predicted that would be descovered since. -
Noble gasses discovered
Sir William Ramsay descovers the noble gasses, which are added to the periodic table as group 0. -
Elements are numbered
it is proposed that the atomic weight of an atom is equil to it's charge. this became known as the Atomic number and is the way the elements in the table are currently numbered.
