    Edmund rice was the 4th of 7 children. He was born at Callan, County Kilkenny into and Irish, Catholic family. His parents were Robert Rice and Margaret Rice.
  • Early Working Life

    Early Working Life
    Edmund recieved a good schooling education before he was apprenticed at the age of 17 by his uncle Michael Rice. His uncle was a weathly merchant of which owned a busy seaport in Waterford. After 15 years of Edmund showing a capacity for hard work, business acumen and legal expertise, Edmund inherited and expanded his uncles business and soon after became wealthy.

    In the year of 1785 Edmund married Mary Elliott and they became the parents of a daughter also named Mary. However very little is known about their married life.
  • Death of Mary Elliott .

    In the early months of 1789 the wife of Edmund Rice; Mary Elliott was involved in a fatal horse riding accident leaving the babys he was at the time pregnant with a handicap. After Marys death Edmund was left to raise the much loved baby alone.
  • Work With Nano Nangle

    Edmund wrote to His Holiness Pius VI in the year 1796 relating to a plan of which ment to set up an education center for poor youth. In 1798, The Presentation Sisters of which were founded by Nano Nangle came to Waterford and Edmund worked with their establishment and charitable work.
  • Establishment of first school

    After gaining inspiration from Nano Nagle, Edmund renovated some property - then set up his own school for the less fortunate children.
  • Builds Monastery

    The Christian Brothers formed a purpose built monastry called 'Mount Sion', it was soon aproved by the pope.
  • Takes vows as member of the Diocesan Society of the Presentation

    Edmund and eight other people take vows as members of the Diocesan Society of the Presentation. They soon would become known as “Gentlemen of the Presentation”
  • Brothers continue work across Ireland

    From 1812-1827 plenty of things happend.
    In 1812 the brothers arrive in Dublin. They then in 1816 arrive in Limerick and Thurles.
    In the year 1817 the Brothers reorganised into a Pontifical Congregation. This ment that they were no longer under the organisational authority of the local bishop.
    In 1822 The reorginisation plan was accepted.
    The first school opened in london in 1825.
    In the year 1827 the brothers become a Pontifical Congregation.
