The History Of The Computer

  • Period: to

    Computer Science Advancements

from 1950 and onward many technological advancements were made in the computer science sector, which were later divided into 5 "generations". Computers built during this time were based on the Von Neumann model.
  • First Generation

    First Generation

Computers made during this time were big, and expensive, therefore only used by big businesses and professionals, they were bulky and only select personel had access to them
  • Second Generation

    Second Generation

Computers made during this time period were smaller, and more affordable, resulting in them being used by smaller businesses that could not afford them previously. New programming languages were invented that made programming easier.
  • Third Generation

    Third Generation

Computers made during this time period used newly developed circuits and chips, which further reduced their size and cost, while increasing their computing power. This lead to the rapid development of the software industry.
  • Fourth Generation

    Fourth Generation

During this generation significant advancements in the electronics industry marked the appearance of desktop computers, that later lead to the development of personal computers (PC). This generation saw rise in the emergence of computer networks.
  • Fifth Generation

    Fifth Generation

During this generation the focus shifted to making computing machines smaller. which resulted in the appearance of the laptop computer, and improvements in storage media. Its characterized by the emergence of the internet, virtual reality, and the revolutionary minimization of electronics that gave way to the creation of the smartphone.
