Orville and Wilbur Wright and the first Airplane
The first heavier-than-air flight traveled one hundred twenty feet in twelve seconds. The two brothers took turns flying that day with the fourth and last flight covering 850 feet in 59 seconds Advantage- They created a new way for transportation, which is a more convienent way for long distance traveling.
Disadvantage- Flying can be dangerous and it has killed many. -
The Jet Engine
Frank Whittle, British inventor, invents the jet engine.
Advantage- allows farther distances of travel through the use of less fuel.
Disadvantage- compared to a reciprocating engine of the same size, they are expensive -
Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart is the first woman to fly a solo non-stop trans-Atlantic flight.
Advantage- Women were motivated to do what they were told was a man's job. -
First Boeing 247 to Fly
A modern airliner, Boeing 247, flies for the first time. It was an all metal, twin engine airplane. -
Sputnik 1 launches
Soviet Union launches first man-made earth satellite, Sputnik 1 -
The First Man to Orbit Earth
John H. Glenn, Jr., was the first American to orbit the earth.
Advantage- Since he was the first man to orbit the earth, the scientists now know new information about space and the earth that will help with their research. -
The First Space Station Lauches
First space station, Soviet Salyut 1, is launched into earth's orbit.
Advantage- first artificial satellite successfully placed in orbit around the Earth -
The First Reusable Spacecraft
U.S. launches the first reusable spacecraft, the Columbia shuttle. Columbia was the first shuttle to reach space, in 1981. Columbia carried dozens of astronauts into space during the next two decades.
Advantage- Since it was the first spaceship to be launched, that means many other will be launched after that. More information about space will be found out.
Disadvantage- Some of the spaceships haven't worked and people have ended up dying from being inside.
