    The first school established in the thirteen colonies. School was held in the teacher's house until a school building was able to be built in 1643. Education was mainly focused on the humanities and languages such as Greek and Latin. This is what present day public schools evolved from.

  • Harvard is founded

    Harvard is founded

    The first american college was founded by the Massachusetts Courts and is named after its first benefactor, John Harvard. The college went on to have eight of its graduates sign the declaration of independence.

    The founding of the Young Ladies Academy of Philadelphia

    This was the first chartered female academy in the United States. The first female school to officially be recognized by the government. This school was not open for long but it still made great strides towards gender equality.
  • Massachusetts's Mandatory Attendance Law

    In 1852 Massachusetts became the first state to make school attendance mandatory.   • Engel v. Vitale

    Engel v. Vitale

    The New York School board had created a prayer to be said at the start of every school. Steven Engel along with other parents fought against the mandatory prayer in their children's school. The Supreme Court found that the prayer violated the first amendment and banned prayer in public schools.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    This act guaranteed the rights of all disabled children to receive a free public education. IDEA outlined standards of how to create an individualized education plan for each disabled student.
