  • J. Edgar Hoover becomes head of the FBI

    He was born in Washington, 1895. When he finished high school he went to law school at night. He started working in 1917 and was appointed “head” on May 10th, 1923. (That was his probationary period.)
  • Mein Kampf is Published

    Hitler wrote this book when he was in prison. Over a 1000 copy’s were made and sold to the public.
  • Stock Market Crash causes The Great Depression

    This event was called “Black Tuesday”. It was caused by people buying stock “on margin” or “on credit”. The stock market during that time was running off “fake money”, and that caused them to lose 14 billion dollars and started The Great Depression.
  • The Dust Bowl Begins

    The Dust Bowl was a natural and man made disaster. The dust was sand and other debris that was picked up by the wind. It would make the area look like it was night time for hours or days on end. It destroyed crops and homes, it caused people to inhale debris. Causing sickness and death.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt first gets elected president

    He ran against Herbert Hoover and won 57% of the votes. He promised to bring a “new deal” to help the people with the Great Depression.
  • The CCC is Created

    The Civilian Conservation Corps was a “new deal” Program created by FDR to help young men get jobs by having them restore forests and prevent fires. They built 3,000 fire watch towers, made over 300 state parks and nature reserves.
  • Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany

    Now that he had gotten that power he could officially bring Nazi Germany to the uprise.
  • WPA is created

    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created to help people get jobs and stimulate the economy during the Great Depression. This was one of the “new deal” programs that was created by FDR.
  • James J. Braddock wins heavyweight boxing title

    Braddock defeated Max Baer in a 15-round unanimous decision. He was nicknamed “Cinderella man” because no one thought that he would survive against Baer, since Baer killed 2 people in the ring before.
  • The Olympic Games of Berlin

    It was the Olympic Games that was hosted by Hitler and Jesse Owens won 4 metals at the games.
  • Kristallnacht

    -11/10/1938. The night of the 9th, Nazi German leaders unleashed a nationwide anti-Jewish riot. They burned down buildings and homes, arrested men for being Jewish, killed people, destroyed religious items, and tortured them.
  • The Grapes of Wrath is Published

    Written by John Steinbeck. This novel expresses how the great depression affected an Oklahoma immigrant family and how the drought impacted their lives.
  • The Wizard of Oz premiers in movie theaters

    It premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood. This movie was based off of 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum.
  • Germany invades Poland

    Hitler wanted more land and invaded the polish. They were outraged and declared war.
  • The Four Freedoms Speech

    Franklin D. Roosevelt says this speech. He talks about the Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Want, and Freedom of Fear.
