  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    This is the begginning of the Cold War (Crimea Conference), the conference ran from February 4-11. The conference was attended by three representatives, one from each country: the United States (President Franklin D. Roosevelt), the United Kingdom (Prime Minister Winston Churchill) and the Soviet Union (Premier Joseph Stalin). This was the second of the three wartime conferences held called the "Big Three" but was considered the start of the Cold War.
  • The "Iron Curtain"

    The "Iron Curtain"
    Winston Churchill gave a speech that was titled the "Iron Curtain". In the speech Churchill blammed the USSR for the conflict at hand. His speech divided Europe in half, one side (west) were governments that were capitalist while to the other (east) the governents were totalitarian.
  • The Berlin Blockade

    The Berlin Blockade
    An attempt by the Soviet Union to prevent the transportation of goods to Berlin by rail, road and water. This was superseded by the Western Allies with what is known as the Berlin Airlift.
  • People's Republic of China

    People's Republic of China
    Newly elected Chairman, Mao Zedong, created and Chaired the People's Repbulic of China. A communist party that was created and run by the Communist Party of China.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    The "Political Division" of Korea that seperated North and South. The North backed by the Chinese and Soviet governments enforcing Communist rule whiile the South was backed by "Western" Allies of Democracy.
  • 17th Parallel

    17th Parallel
    The Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone during the Second Indochina War (Vietnam War) was commonly referred to as the "17th Parallel". The 17th Parallel seperated North and South Vietnam and was "created" in the First Indochina War (French Indochina War). The majority of the separation runs along the Ben Hai River. The South was controlled by Communist movement Viet Minh while the North controlled by the State of Vietnam, controlled primarily by the French.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
    The first artifical satelite put into the Earth's orbit, launched by the Soviet Union. This was the beginning/cause of what is now known as the "Space Race". This signified not only an advancement in technology but also created new technology that would later improve not only civilian lifestyle but enhance and lead way to new military technology.
  • Fidel Castro

    Fidel Castro
    After the Guerrilla War ended in 1959, Fidel Castro was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Cuba. This brought a Communist Regime to Cuba, close to American soil.
  • John F. Kennedy

    John F. Kennedy
    John F. Kennedy was a big advocate and made a name for himself during the "Space Race". The Cuban Missle Crisis for Kennedy though was a scare on his Presidency with the poor outcome during the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion and the near "Nuclear Holocaust" that came about during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Kennedy pushed American Superiority as well as created positive civilian hype in regards to the war.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    A CIA directed invasion on Cuba that failed within three days of it's deployment. This invasion left a poor battle reputation for the new President, John F. Kennedy.
  • The Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall
    the start of a barrier errected by the German Democratic Reppublic, later called "The Berlin Wall". The purpose of the wall was to detour immigration from the East to the West, away from communist rule.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    Nuclear War threat that occured against Cuba and the Soviet Union. This war was the closest "modern" war to be fought near American Soil. This war brought along wide spread panic of Nuclear War and Invasion in the United States.
  • Soviets Invade Afghanistan

    Soviets Invade Afghanistan
    This war is monumental as it involved a divided country, the Soviet lead Afghan forces fought the Peshawar Seven and the Tehran Eight. The Peshawar Seven and Tehran Eight were trained, taught and lead by Allied Forces.
  • Soviets Withdraw from Afghanistan

    Soviets Withdraw from Afghanistan
    This withdrawal was brought about the Geneva Accords that would allow the withdrawal of foreign troops as well as the return of refugess and other events to restore the country.
  • Revolutions of 1989

    Revolutions of 1989
    The Revolutions of 1989 was the beginning of the fall of Communism which was the end of the Cold War. During the revolution, many communist countries became free of the communist rule they were under. The most signifigant was the Soviet Union in 1991.
