    Beginning of the Spanish Empire

    Began with Christopher Columbus Voyages. Rather then control the trade the empire would control the land and the people who lived there.

    The Treaty of Tordesillas

    This treaty allocated land to Spain and Portugal. West of the line belonged to Spain and the east belonged to Portugal.

    John Cabot

    Explored parts of North America for England. He was interested in finding a westward route to Asia, believing there was a shorter route then what Colombus used.

    Vasco De Gama

    He reached India and found highly developed Indian commerce with trading post run by Muslims. This opened up new trading routes.

    Hernan Cortes

    He arrived on the coast of Mexico he made his way inland starting battles and starting alliances.

    Ferdinand Magellians

    His ships sailed the globe. Although the conditions on his boat were terrible he harshly punished those who betrayed him. He, like Colombus, had no financial backing for his trip so he went to Spain for funding.

    Treaty of Zaragoza

    Another treat that was to establish bounds for each county in the Indian Ocean and public regions.

    Silver Found

    The Spanish uncovered huge deposit of silver in Potosi and began conscripting indigenous people to do the dangerous work in the mines.
