    Mexican Independence

    Mexico gained independence from Spain, the Treaty of Cordoba ended the Mexican war for independence. The treaty allowed immediate independence from Spain, Catholism is the official religion, and equal rights for all Spanish citizens.

    Haden Edwards was a new empresario and found Mexican settlers on his land and aggressively told them to leave. The settlers reported this to the Mexican government and they fired Edwards, so he took the land for himself. He called it the Public of Fredonia. The people with him were the first people to declare independence from Mexico.

    The Mexican Government sent General Menrel to see what's happening up south in and near Texas. As he travels north he sees the Mexican influence decreasing, the Anlgo settlers outnumbered the Mexicans 1 to 10. This created tension between the two.

    This law stopped all immigration from the U.S., terminated all Anglo contracts, no more bringing slaves into Texas, increased all terrifs on imported goods from the U.S. and they made military post in Texas. Stephen F. Austin and others didn't like the law.

    Texas delegates met in special meetings, which were conventions. The agreed to stay loyal to Mexico if Mexico canceled the Law of April 6 and made Texas separate so they could have their own representation in government.

    Austin wrote a letter to the Mexican government to allow Texans to set up their own state government. Austin reached Santa Anna and he said no. Mexican authorities found the letter ht send and arrest Austin for a year. This made Texans mad at Santa Anna

    Texas Delegates were separated when they met at the Consultation of 1835, some wanted to declare independence from Mexico while others wanted to restore the Constitution of 1824.

    Santa Anna and thousands of Mexican soldiers began a 13-day siege. They overpowered the Texian army. The Texian army did not successfully defend the Alamo. Texans were inspired from this.

    William B. Travis wrote a passionate letter with the words "Victory or Death." He said this because it meant him and his army would either win or die, not surrender.

    Colonel James Fanin and 300 other Texas army men were going to the Alamo but were intercepted by the Mexican General at Coleto Creek. The Texan army was surrounded in an open field and had to surrender.

    Houston ordered James Fanin to retreat his army, but James was too slow and due to that 350 Texan army men were captured. James surrendered with the Urrea promis for all of his men to be prisoners of war. Instead Santa Anna ordered his army to shoot all the men.

    Santa Anna s army attacked Houstons army, but Houston had an advantage from the landscape. Texans cried "Remember the Alamo!" Remember Golliad!" The whole Mexican army was killed or injured, Santa Anna hid but was found.

    They made Santa Anna sign two treaties. One made Texas officially independent from Mexico. The other was that Mexican troops cant pass the Rio Grande river. Santa Anna was released back into Mexico and the Rio Grande the border.
