    Broadcasting was invented
    In 1906 a Canadian Physicist sent a message and people heard it in other states. At this point in time messages being received were still weak and unclear at times. By 1907 scientist's were amplifying radio signals. In the next 10 years frequency modulation broadcasting would advance and help to provide a clearer signal and eventually help in developing television sets.

    Entertainment broadcasting started in the 1910s then continued into the 1920s and was very popular. An program early on that was popular was Lee De Forest's radio tube named the "Audion". The tube continued to be worked on by other inventors to help with the clarity and power in sending and receiving messages.

    Throughout what was the radio golden age many television genres that are still enjoyed today were originally heard over the radio. Some include; soap operas, game shows, and mysteries. Radio stations started opening all over and millions of listeners were tuning in to different stations. During this time, portable radios were also created allowing people to listen from anywhere at any time.

    Hindenburg Airship Explosion
    A reporter, Herb Morrison witness and recorded the scene when the Hindenburg airship exploded. The next day it would be broadcasted all over. Live broadcasting and the radio heavily influenced the American media at the time, including establishing national broadcasting networks like NBC.
  • Radio During World War II

    Radio During World War II
    During WWI radio technology was not practical and it vastly improved when WWII occurred. The vacuum tube radios were lighter, portable and battery operated. Additionally airplanes, submarines and tanks had radios and the transmissions went farther and they were more reliable than before. This soon became a huge part of helping throughout the war as they were able to develop an untraceable cipher.

    Commercial TV Broadcasting Began
    In 1947 the first full-scale television came out for the public and it was slow going with programs and stations at first but it started to advance. In the span of 12 years, those who own television sets rose to 90 percent, majority of households had them. In the following years as television advanced so did the programs that were on. Major events like President Eisenhower's Inauguration and the 1968 NFL championship were broadcasted and watched by millions.

    Eisenhower's Presidential Inaguration
    Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1953 Presidential Inauguration was broadcasted on January 20th, 1953. The program included an oath, the inaugural parade, an a part of his address. This was a major moment as people from all over could witness the ceremony. After this was broadcasted many there large events started being broadcasted and television continued to evolve and grow.
  • Color Television

    Color Television
    The first successful colored television sets were created and tested until 1953. In 1954 the first color television sets were sold with a 15 inch screen. By 1955 all sets were made with a 21 inch screen, although few sold 15 and 19 inch screens as well. Sales of color sets were slow until the 60s when they were deemed to be reliable and also made cheaper.
