The main reason for going was to collect animal specimens for the Smithsonian and other museums. He wanted to take a break from politics and do something he loved which was exploring and being near nature and wildlife. After his adventure he went back into politics.

This was important because it was the first time a successful third party was made. It was also important because the Democratic candidate, Woodrow Wilson easily won when the vote was split.
