The charge was a success, and now major factor in the American victory at Santiago, this charge helped Roosevelt to a national hero status, and cemented the Rough Riders' iconic place in American history

    Teddy Roosevelt became president after president McKinley was assassinated in 1901. At the time he was vice president, and was sworn in after his death. This was very unexpected.
