This Battle was part of the Saratoga Campaign. The British received news of a column of Continental Soldiers coming to reinforce Fort Stanwix. They made haste to ambush the troops. The result was a costly American defeat. The battle, however, was also costly for the Natives. They had believed that they would be utilized chiefly as supporting forces, but instead they did the majority of fighting. This hurt the morale of British-allied indigenous soldiers.

The Battle of Brandywine Creek was one of the longest and biggest battles of the American Revolutionary War. Indeed, with 11 hours of consecutive fighting and the most troops of any battle, it was quite significant. The Battle was fought between Howe and Washington, on Howe's march to Philadelphia. America had both of its flanks bbefore and were forced to concede. The costly defeat left Philadelphia open for attack.

Originally, British generals Burgoyne and Howe were on the march, Burgoyne from Montreal and Howe from New York. Their plan: isolate New England. However, with Burgoyne stopped at Saratoga, Howe changed tact. He moved his 15,000 troops to Maryland. From there, he launched an attack on Philadelphia, where Washington’s men had assembled. Washington was defeated, and Philadelphia fell to the British. The Continental Congress fortunately escaped, but Washington was forced into Valley Forge.

However, fog and confusion caused disorganization among the Americans, leading to a British victory.
