    Galileo

    Galileo
    1. Full name: Galileo Galilei
    2. Born: February 15, 1564 Died: January 8, 1642
    3. Claim to fame: Galileo's greatest contribution to physics was his formulation of the concept of inertia: an object in a state of motion possesses an ``inertia'' that causes it to remain in that state of motion unless an external force acts on it.
    4. Age of fame: 42 years old
    5. Age of death: 77 years old
    6. Interesting fact: Galileo became blind at the age of 72.
  • Von Guericke

    Von Guericke
    1. Full name: Otto Van Guericke
    2. Born: November 20, 1602 Died: May 11, 1686
    3. Claim to fame: He invented the air pump in 1647, by which he was able to create a vacuum. He gave considerable thougth to air pressure and density and, in 1672, built a water barometer.
    4. Age of fame: 45
    5. Age of death: 83
    6. Interesting fact: He designed the world's first vacuum.
  • Torricelli

    Torricelli
    1. Full name: Evangelista Torricelli
    2. Born:October 15, 1608 Died: October 25, 1647
    3. Claim to fame: Torricelli invented the barometer; he was the first man to create a sustained vacuum. He concluded that the variation of the height of mercury from day to day was caused by changes in atmospheric pressure.
    4. Age of fame: 35
    5. Age of death: 39
    6. Interesting fact: He was Galileo's secretary in 1641-42.
  • Pascal

    Pascal
    1. Full name: Blaise Pascal
    2. Born: June 16, 1623 Died: August 19, 1662
    3. Claim to fame: Pascal invented the syringe and created the hydraulic press, an instrument based on Pascal’s law: pressure applied to a confined liquid is transmitted undiminished through the liquid in all directions regardless of the area to which the pressure is applied.
    4. Age of fame: 23
    5. Age of death: 39
    6. Interesting fact: He also invented the roulette wheel.
  • Huygens

    Huygens
    1. Full name: Christiaan Huygens
    2. Born: April 14, 1629 Died: July 8, 1695
    3. Claim to fame: He invented the manometer to measure the pressure of liquids and gases
    4. Age of fame: 32
    5. Age of death: 66
    6. Interesting fact: Discovered the nature of Saturn's rings and discovered its moon Titan
  • Dalton

    Dalton
    1. Full name: John Dalton
    2. Born: September 6, 1766 Died: July 27, 1844
    3. Claim to fame: He came up with Dalton's law of partial pressures that in a mixture of gases, each component exerts the same pressure as it would if it alone made up the whole volume of the mixture. From there Dalton decided that all matter, not only gases, must consist of small particles.
    4. Age of fame: 35
    5. Age of death: 77
    6. Interesting fact: He began teaching at the age of 12.
  • Avogadro

    Avogadro
    1. Lorenze Romano Amadeo Carlo Avogadro di Quaregna e di Cerreto.
    2. Born: August 9, 1776 Died: July 9, 1856
    3. Claim to fame: He stated that equal volumes of all gases at the same temperature and pressure contains the same number of molecules
    4. Age of fame: 35
    5. Age of death: 79
    6. Interesting fact: There is a crater on the moon named Avogadro
