When Fernando died, his widow, Queen María Cristina, took over the goverment, as Isabel was still too young. At the same time, Carlos de Brbón declared himself king of Spain. This led to the first Carlist War (1833-1840) -
After his father, Isabel II inhered the throne at age 3.
