This event is significant to my personal and educational experiences because Facebook is an internet source I use to connect with friends, family, and colleagues. I have joined several Facebook groups to collaborate and connect with other educators as well.

1 billion internet users is a very significant event because I was born in 2001 and cannot imagine life without the internet. 1 billion people accessing and collaborating through the internet is very important and eye-opening to the amount of users.

Internet2 had successfully built a network across the U.S.(east to west coast) providing 100 GB/s bandwidth for educational and research purposes. This event is significant because it expanded the capacity of the research network, creating faster transmission of datasets and network experiences.

Twitter surpassing 200 million active users is significant because it shows the rise of social media and how influential it became to the internet and society. As a teacher, we see the positive and negative effects of social media and to see how many active users there were almost 10 years ago is eye-opening. Image URL:

Facebook and other social media services were found to have been used by foreign governments to influence the 2016 U.S. election was revealed. The discovery confirmed that campaigns were weaponizing social media to manipulate public opinion, deepen existing social divisions, and undermine democratic processes. Russian "troll farms" known as IRA were involved in a variety of tactics. This is significant because without proper education of politics, this still happens through social media today.
