Polly was born to a gentle, religious family in the village of Slamannan in the Southern uplands of Scotland.Her Father, William Hutchison worked as a coal miner. Her Mother, Helen generosity was known to every one.She grew up looking forward to a life much like that of her parents. She was small and slim with warm brown eyes and an abundance of shining brown hairs.

Polly went to work for Grossart Drapers in Carluke, where her brother jim lived. Mr.Grossart was a good employer, treating his staff like family , and among his staff there was a slim, handsome young man who worked there as a draper. his name was John Wilson.

John presented polly with "a nice little diamond ring". Their courtship wasn't rushed. They had known each other four years, courting for three of them, before they married. The young couple spent their honeymoon in Dublin.

Jack's brother, Alex, ran their parents' once thriving business into the ground. Alex took 200 pounds from his sister, raised 300 pounds by granting a bond on the store's property, and stole 500 pounds from an old family friend. Jack took money out of the greenhouse's business to pay off his brother's debts and stole money outright from his brother-in-law.

Jack is diagnosed with tuberculosis by his doctor. In 1917 it was a death sentence as only 10% survived. A person can have the disease for a long time without feeling ill. The only possible cure in 1917 was good food and complete bed rest. Jessie Patterson took main care of Jack during the winter of 1917-18.

-Polly is very worried about Jack as he has not written and she knows of his illness -Jack has not wrote as he has turned his attention to Jessie -Polly decides to go find Jack to ensure he is okay -Polly's family disapproves of the trip at first -Eventually they give in and chip in for her ticket.....a ticket that will ruin their lives forever

Jack drove to Prince Albert to volunteer for an overseas cavalry unit. This is where Polly calls and fortunately gets ahold of Jack.

Jack gets Polly to come to Saskatoon, and says they have a house waiting for them in Saskatoon. When Polly gets to Saakatoon Jack takes her to Rosthern, becuase he says he must go there on business. As they are driving polly notices the shovel and the shotgun in the back of the car. Jack pulls off of the rode to shoot some geese then he shoots off the top of Polly's head with the Shotgun. This event leads up to the many troubles Jack faces in book two.
