When prime minister Mackenzie King called for a re-election, The governor General Byng refused the re-election. King managed to form a government, however it fell apart after only 3 days. It ended with King winning the election by arguing that Byng was interfering with a sovereign nation.

The stock market crashed largely due to people spending massive amounts of money they didn't have on stocks and living on credit. This resulted in massive unemployment and ⅕ Canadians depending on government relief for survival. In addition to this between the years 1929 -1933 total public and private spending fell by 42%

The Dust Bowl was created by droughts in the parries that began in 1929. The lack of water meant the topsoil became loose. This created large dust storms. This is why its called the dust bowl.

Bennett gave the people hope compared to King, who had seen them into the Great Depression.

Bennett created relief camps in order to try and give people jobs and a way to make a living. However this wasn't popular among the people.The camps were voluntary, however if you refused to join you would likely be arrested for vagrancy. People felt they were more like a prison.

By 1933 30% of the Labor force was unemployed. This resulted in a group of 70,000 transients being formed. People who were unable to find work, this resulted in people having to continuously travel looking for work.

Bennett's new deal proposed the following:
progressive taxation, limiting work hours per week, Introducing minimum wage, stronger regulation of working conditions, unemployment insurance, health and accident insurance, revised pension plan, agricultural support, a marketing board to regulate wheat prices -
In 1935 residents of the employment camps went on strike and traveled by train and truck to protest the working conditions

In this photo we can see a group of protesters protesting about the lack of employment. The saying "We want to be citizens not transients" Means they don't want to have to contentiously travel around looking for work. They want to actually live in one place and work there as well.

After the people didn’t like Bennett's “New deal”. People turned back to Mackenzie King for guidance.

The protesters of the On to Ottawa-Trek were stopped at Regina and some of the leaders were selected to talk with Bennett. These talks were far from successful and Bennett wanted to have the speakers arrested. This is what led to the Regina riot.
