While Ignatius was healing from the cannonball wounds, he was brought two books to read, The Lives of the Saints and Ludolph of Saxony's Life of Our Savior. After he read the books over and over he had a vision of the Blessed Mother Mary hold Baby Jesus. Once Ignatius was well enough, he went on an adventure to Manresa where he prayed 7 hours a day and began the Spiritual Excercises

Ignatius traveled to the Holy Land while preaching to the public. Ignatius stayed there from September 3 to the 23. Ignatius then studied at the University of Paris for seven years.

Ignatius gained six important companions who all studied at the Universary of Paris with him. Their names were Francis Xavier, Alfonso Salmeron, Diego Laynez,Nicholas Bobadilla, Peter Faber, and Simão Rodrigues. Later another man joined them named Francisco de Borja. On August 15, 1534 they all made their vows of lifelong poverty, obedience, and chastity.
