    Cherokee War

    Kelsey H. Douglass, Edward Burleson, Willis H. Landrum, and Rusk were sent to try to negotiate for the Indians to leave. When the Indians refused to sign the treaty, it advanced into several battles. The Cherokee War ended on December 25th when Burleson attacked the Cherokee. (The cherokee war of 1839) Reference:

    Sam Houston President

    Mirabeau Lamar is President of Texas

  • Texans win Battle of Plum Creek

    Sam Houston Re-elected for President

  • Battle of Salado Creek

    Captain John C. "Jack" Hays led a small army in the Battle of Salado Creek where they defeated the Mexican forces. Woll then retreated back to Mexico. (Campbell, 2003 p. 161) Reference:

  • Black Bean Episode

    Many Texians had been captured by Mexican forces. Following an escape, 176 men were recaptured and forced to draw out of a jar filled with bean. In the jar, 17 beans were black and the rest were white. Those who drew black beans were sentenced to be shot to death that evening. (The Republic of Texas The Mier Expedition) Reference:

  • Texas Convention Accepts Annexation

    After long negotiations about the possible annexation of Texas, the United States had finally proposed annexation of Texas. On this day, the approval of the annexation was voted on and was adopted almost unanimously. (Campbell, 2003 p. 168) Reference:
