    In January, 1944, Allied forces moved into Cassino. They successfully broke through the German defense. The immediate goal was to capture Rome. With the assist of the forces in Anzio, who joined in to help, and it didnt take long at all. Constant relenless fighting would continue for a few months until German forces finally surrendered.

    In Paris an uprising started by the french resistance freed the city from german control. On August 25, 1944, a french dividion of ther first US first army officialy liberated Paris. That same day, General Charles de Gaulle arrived in the city, prepared to take charge of the french government.

    The Nazis fought desperately to defend their conquests. To the north, the Allied attack on the Netherlands faltered at the Rhine River. Meanwhile, Hitler reinforced the army with thousands of additional draftees, some as young as 15. Then, in mid-December 1944, Germany launched a counterattack in Belgium and Luxembourg. The German attack smashed into the U.S. First Army and pushed it back, forming a bulge in the Allied line. ( Bobby)
