    Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819. The soon to be ruler of the country of London, England. As the daughter of Prince Edward and Princess Victoria, she was destined to one day take over the country and become one of the greatest and most powerful leaders of all time ("Queen Victoria").

    Astley Cooper Preforms Famous Surgery
    Astley was an extremely intelligent surgeon during Victoria's time. During the many years of his life, he preformed his most famous surgery to cure an aneurysm. He did other surgery's such as remove an infected cyst from the head of George IV. He was also appointed sergeant surgeon of Queen Victoria (Grun 408).
  • First Railroad Is Built

    First Railroad Is Built
    The workers of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company completed the 136 mile railroad that ran all the way from Charleston to Hamburg. It was built of hardwood rails, also making it the longest railroad in the world when it was completed. It was the first railroad in the country to be entirely powered by steam, transport passengers, and carry mail under a contract (Grun 389).

    When Lord Melbourne left office, Robert Peel was called in. Peel mentioned the changes he thought should be made to the royal household to Victoria, to get rid of the women of the bedchamber whose husbands were Whigs. Victoria turned down the idea and advised Melbourne to go back to normal. But when the Whig administration fell later, the question came back. The husbands arranged the ladies to leave voluntarily which settled the disagreement for good ("Queen Victoria Timeline").

    This event became known as the Act of Union. It was passed by the British Parliament in July of 1840. It gave parliament equal representation in each whole section and even prohibited the use of French in official government use. All together, it united the colonies of upper Canada and lower Canada into one government which created the Province of Canada (Act of Union).

    As Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were returning home in their open-topped carriage when John Francis attempted to fire a pistol into the carriage. He was spotted by police who rushed towards him in an attempt to knock the pistol out of his hand. As he got hold of the pistol, it went off but did not injure Victoria or her husband ("Queen Victoria Timeline").

    This year marked the beginning of the crop failure caused by a disease that destroys the leaves and the edible roots of the potato plant. The potato was food and cash to many land owners. The crop paid rent and bought family necessities, the rest fed the family. Many with no place home and little to eat tried living in holes dug in the Irish bog. This all resulted in millions of peoples' death and need to flee the country (LukeMatish).

    This tragic event nearly destroyed Victoria. She did not appear in public and even made her staff to keep her husband's rooms exactly as he had left it. She mourned him by wearing black for the remaining forty years of her life. Soon enough, the rumor was spread that she was going mad ("Queen Victoria Timeline").

    Alexander Grahm Bell Invents Telephone
    As he grew older, Alexander decided to establish a school for the deaf in Boston. While teaching, he experimented with transmitting several telegraph messages at the same time over a wire to help the deaf learn to speak. Over these many years, the idea of the telephone finally came to him. Two years later, he used it on a patent. And finally on March 10, the first complete sentence, “Mr. Watson, come here; I want you”—was transmitted (Lukematish).

    Victoria Becomes Empress of India
    This year was very significant to Queen Victoria. During this year, Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli announced Queen Victoria as Empress of India. This title was mostly used to bring India closer to Britain. Queen Victoria opened parliament in person, the first time since her jusband had died, to announce the change in her title. Celebrations were held in Delhi on January 1, 1877 ("Queen Victoria Timeline").

    On September 23, 1896, Victoria passed Britain’s longest-reigning monarch title held by King George III, but she requested that celebrations to be delayed until June 1897, which was the 60th anniversary of her rule. On the morning of Tuesday, June 22, 1897, hundreds of thousands of people crowded the London sidewalks to celebrate the extraordinary event ("Queen Victoria Timeline").

    Queen Victoria Dies
    Victoria's death ended an amazing era in British history. After 63 years, and an enormous global expansion of her empire, it came her time. She gave her name to an era that became a representation of the power of her kingdom that she created. With her, she left behind perhaps the most famous quote known in history to this day, "The sun never sets in the British Empire" ("Queen Victoria").
