Pliny the Elder researched many books, upwards of 2000, to complete his 37-volume work Naturalis Historia. Pliny very much so used the Empiricism method of scientific research. He used his experiences, combined with those of others that he studied, to create what has become to be known as the worlds first Encyclopedia. Pliny gathered facts about the natural world, combined with what seems to be folklore and leaned on his own travels to create a work designed to give facts quick to his readers.

After his death, his book, Historia Naturalis, was used as general knowledge teaching until the late 17th century. His "facts" were scrutinized by the scientific community due to the pseudo scientific methods used, and his writing style. However, he was the pioneer of the encyclopedia styled books.
