  • First PlayStation

    First PlayStation

The PlayStation 1 (PS1) was released in 1994 in Japan and in 1995 in the rest of the world. It sold over 102 million units, becoming one of the most successful consoles of its time. It was Sony's first console and popularized CD-based games, which allowed for better graphics, sound, and cinematics than cartridges. Its original controller later evolved into the DualShock, with vibration and analog sticks.
  • PlayStation 2

    PlayStation 2

Approximately 160 million people purchased the PlayStation 2, making it the best-selling video game console in history.
The improvements between the platforms are that each one improves the capacity, graphics, loading time, etc.
  • PlayStation 3

    PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) was released in 2006 and sold approximately 87 million units. It was Sony's first console with a Blu-ray player, internal hard drive, and high-definition graphics, although its high initial price initially impacted sales. Over time, it improved significantly thanks to great games and system updates. Its Sixaxis controller (and later the DualShock 3) incorporated motion detection and vibration.
  • PlayStation Vita

    PlayStation Vita

The PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) was released in 2011 (Japan) and 2012 (rest of the world). It sold around 15 to 16 million units, less than Sony had hoped for. It was a very powerful handheld console for its time, with an OLED screen, graphics almost on par with the PS3, and a rear touchpad. It had Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity and could connect to the PS3 and PS4 for Remote Play. However, its high price and lack of exclusive games negatively impacted its sales.
  • PlayStation 4

    PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 4 (PS4) was released in 2013 and sold over 116 million units, becoming one of the most successful consoles in history. It was a significant leap forward from the PS3, featuring high-definition graphics, stable performance, and a faster, more user-friendly interface. Its DualShock 4 controller added a touchpad, light bar, and improved ergonomics. Furthermore, the PS4 Pro version allowed for 4K gaming.
  • PlayStation VR

    PlayStation VR

The PlayStation VR represented Sony Interactive Entertainment's attempt to bring virtual reality to the console market in a more accessible way. With over 5 million units sold, it achieved moderate success. It offered good technical components for its time (OLED, 120Hz, decent field of view) and the advantage of integration with the existing PS4. However, its adoption was limited compared to the volume of base consoles, and it faced competition from high-performance PC VR solutions.
  • PlayStation 5

    PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) was released in 2020 and has sold over 40 million units. It is significantly more powerful than the PS4, featuring 4K graphics, ultra-fast loading times thanks to its SSD, and a Dual Sense controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. It comes in two versions (with or without a disc drive) and is backward compatible with most PS4 games.
  • PlayStation VR2

    PlayStation VR2

The PlayStation VR2 is the next-generation virtual reality headset for the PS5, offering substantial improvements over the previous generation (better resolution, eye tracking, greater immersion). Despite its great technical potential, its commercial adoption has been more modest than expected—although it had a good start with approximately 600,000 units sold in six weeks, the global VR market remains largely niche.
  • PlayStation Portal

    PlayStation Portal

The PlayStation Portal is a handheld gaming device with an integrated controller that doesn't function as a standalone console. Instead, it streams games from the PlayStation 5 console.
It features built-in DualSense-style controllers and is primarily designed for PS5 Remote Play or, in some cases, cloud streaming. While Sony hasn't released complete official sales figures, it's estimated that around 2 million units were sold worldwide during its first year of availability.
