In the 1920s, Phoenix Junior College would borrow a plaster bear from the local ice cream parlor for its games and to be used for other events. In 1931, the college received a concrete bear statue from the Standard Oil Company in downtown Phoenix. The statue was given to the college by a student. In 1935, another student coined the bear's name as Bumstead. Link text
