  • Abdülmecid I

    Became Sultan until his death on June 25,1861.
    He was the first Sultan to speak French and issured two major social and political reform edicts known as the Hatt-ı Şerif of Gülhane (Noble Edict of the Rose Chamber) in 1839 and the Hatt-ı Hümayun (Imperial Edict) in 1856.
  • Abdülaziz

    Became Sultan until his death on June 4, 1876.
    He continued modernizing reforms that had been initiated by his predecessors until 1871.
  • Murad V

    Became Sultan until his death on September 21, 1840.
    He recieved a good education and was widely read in both Turkish and European literature.
  • Abdülhamid II

    Became Sultan until April of 1909 because of a short-lived reactionary uprising.
    Under his rule, the reform movement of Tanzimat (reorganization) reached its climax and adopted a policy of pan-Islamism in opposition to Western invention in Ottoman affairs.
  • Mehmed V

    Became Sultan until his death on July 3, 1918.
    Educated in traditional Islamic subjects and Persian literature, he showed a keen interest in Ottoman and Islamic history, but he lacked the ability to govern.
