Lennie and George are heading to the Ranch at the start of the novel because Lennie was suspected of raping a woman in Weed. He began to feel the woman's dress since he enjoys feeling soft things, and he didn't let go of it even after the woman urged him to. A gang of guys was hell-bent on lynching Lennie. When the men came looking for them, Lennie and George had to hide, and they eventually fled away from their home to work at the Ranch.

Lennie and George were walking to Salinas River on Thursday evening, a day before they arrived at the ranch. Lennie discovered a mouse in his pocket while walking and began petting him. Because Lennie was unaware of his own power, he snapped its neck while patting him. When they arrived at the river, George insisted on seeing what was in Lennie's pocket. This was one of the few occasions that Lennie shown his fondness for soft toys. This event in the story foreshadows a later event.

Friday morning, George urged Lennie not to say anything to the boss if he asked him a question because he knows Lennie will make a mistake. They acquired a job working with Slim after meeting the ranch's boss. He becomes their friend and gifts one of his puppies to Lennie. Curley and his wife approach Lennie and George next. Curley wants to fight Lennie, and his wife is on the lookout for him. Lennie expresses his admiration for her to George, but Candy cautions them about Curley's wife.
