Together with Morris Halle, Chomsky founded the Department of Linguistics at MIT due to the lack of official recognition for linguistics as an academic discipline. He was (and still is) one of the leading professors in Linguistics. As a tribute to their pioneering contributions, MIT formally dedicated the department to Chomsky and Halle in the Spring of 2022.

In the late 1950s, Noam Chomsky formulated the Chomsky Hierarchy, which outlined four distinct levels of grammar: Type 0, Unrestricted grammar; Type 1, Context Sensitive Grammar; Type 2, Context Free Grammar; and Type 3, Regular Grammar. This hierarchy constitutes a mathematical theory of language categorized into classes that can be processed by machines.
