Initially a left wing movement but rapidly became right wing and against socialism. Many young men across the country joined, and were employed by landowners/businessmen to intimidate and beat up workers/unionists who were causing trouble and to drive land occupiers off of landowners' land.

Brought Mussolini and the Fascists to power in Italy. Fascist Blackshirts gathered and threatened to march on the capital, Rome, to seize control of the government. Although the Fascists appeared strong, their numbers and weapons were exaggerated, and the army could probably have stopped them. PM Luigi Facta wanted martial law declared, but King Emmanuel III refused, he feared civil war and believed Mussolini could restore stability. Instead, the King invited Mussolini to form a government.
