    5 tribes resisted adapting to white assimilation. america was growing and needed more land. southeastern tribes to relocate to land west of the Mississippi river all because of Andrew jackson.
  • The Trail of Tears

    The Trail of Tears
    natives traveled over 5000 miles to Indian territory (present day Oklahoma) on the trail of tears. many native americans died on the trail of Tears due to starvation, sickness,extreme cold and hot temps, and exhaustion. the Cherokee tribe suffered the most.

    many of the 5 tribes had slaves. all tribes disliked opening native land to white settlement. tribes distrusted the government and Lincoln. the 5 tribes support the confederacy. south began to recruit the 5 tribes and other natives. Indian territory became part of the confederacy. tribes signed treaties and made alliances with the confederacy. in return tribes would provide troops for the souths military and help fight.

    the treaty signed by tribes in Indian territory that abolished slavery. construction of two railroads across indian territory. gave up western half of Indian territory. sovereignty was limited. loss of territory meant dealing with white settlers and other relative tribes. allowed cattlemen to run herds through land .

    The land in indian territory was open for settlement. it was the first major white settlement in the territory. the land was also very cheap then.

    The Indian Reorganization Act
    The act gave Native Americans greater control over their lands and they let them step in the right direction for native rights but it still wasn't good enough for the natives.
