Napoleon Bonaparte makes Spain surrender Louisiana in help to resurrect a French Empire in North America. This obviously does not work in his favor and ends up selling Louisiana to the United States a couple years later. The United States claiming everything east of the Rio Grande then starts trouble with Spain.(102)

Philip Nolan was killed during his fourth trip to Texas. Nolan took advantage of the Spanish Crown and traded with Texas Indians. His license was not valid and was suspected as a spy. He chose to stay in Texas and live with many tribes there. It was by his fourth trip to Texas of him trading with no license that the Spaniards caught on to him and was killed by a cannonball. His men quickly surrendered claiming they were there to capture mustangs.(105)

Baron proposes to colonize Texas with Louisiana families. He got a letter of recommendation from the former governor of Louisiana when he arrived in San Antonio. He then proposed to establish a colony between Bexar and the Trinity River. His plan eventually fell through but the baron soon settled in San Antonio and became a leading member of the community.(106)

Antonio Cordero y Bustamante had to defend the Texas frontier of New Spain from Anglo Americans seeking land. Cordero has been in many harsh situations before like fighting Indians on the northern frontier of New Spain. General Nemecio would turn to Cordero for help to take command in Texas.(108)

Spanish authorities were advancing in the United States and occupying new posts and making new settlements. Jefferson ordered troops to chase the Spanish out. Commander General Nemecio Salcedo Proposed establishing a neutral ground between Natchitoches and the Sabine River. The boundary between the United States and Spanish territory was negotiated.(106.107)

Father Hidalgo launches revolt against Spanish rule. Hidalgo gave an impassioned call to arms to the people of Mexico that triggered the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. News of this revolt traveled quicky and didn't receive much support at first. Texas then later eventually joins the revolt. (117)

Texas Independence was proclaimed. Miguel Menchaca leads a division of Mexican American soldiers in battle. Arredondo defeats Republican Army of the North. The daylong battle was a disaster for Toledo's army.(122)

Antonio Martinez comes to Texas to take over as governor. At this point things have not been going well. Grain shipments were unreliable to meet Texas needs from Coahuila. Raids from Lipan and Norteno had left a decent number of Tejanos dead and other captured. Texas was falling apart with destruction of herds and facing invasions from the United States.(125)

The United States and Spain have been going at it on whose land is whose. The neutral ground has weakened the U.S. position. They eventually come to an agreement. John Quincy Adams and Luis de Onis compromise that Spain will keep Texas but give up Florida. Secretary of State Adams and President James Monroe concluded that Spain Would soon lose control of Mexico and then soon lose Texas and fall to the United States.(128)
