Literacy Journey

  • Birth

No literacy knowledge, probably just cried. Family spoke to me in spanish
  • First Words

Began to speak, everyone says I would talk sooo much. In spanish of course. Everyone says I talked and sang all day the second I could. Loved Dora
  • Frustrated Learning English

My teachers on field day didn't understand me when I was trying to inform them I had shorts under my pants. I kept repeating "shirts". Also was learning letters, in english.
  • Started Pre-K

Only spoke spanish but I watched some shows in english. I thought I was prepared. I would tell my mom I knew english because I knew the word pencil, shampoo (which we said the same way anyways), girl, boy, and I knew how to introduce myself.
  • Kindergarten

I don't remember struggling to speak english in kinder. I was also never in english. I talked a lot and had many friends.
  • Learning more

K- 1st my language, reading, and writing was getting stronger. Made my first 'book' for a school project
  • Books

Loveedd making books. In second grade my teacher would always read my books to the class. I remember because of something I wrote, she taught me mouses isn't a word. Multiple of them is mice. Core memory. That conversation led to a lesson on words like that. (deer, fish)
  • 3rd

Still would make books all the time. I did not have a spanish accent and I would translate for others.
  • Middle school

I was in advanced reading classes. I also won a spelling bee but then got too nervous to compete.
  • High School

In order to graduate early, on top of passing my classses and having all my credits, I had to write an essay. I did so and graduated early.
