In the Army of West Tennessee, Sherman was assigned to serve with Grant.

The Confederates struck on April 6, 1862. With reinforcements, Union troops were able to launch a counter attack the following morning.

On September 1864, Sherman burned Atlanta to the ground. He then proceeded with 60,000 men his "March to the Sea".

In 1869, Grant became president and Sherman took the position as general commander of the U.S. Army.

On February 14, 1891, Sherman died in New York City. He was then buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.
