American troops land on Okinawa because they needed a base even closer to Japan to stock up. The japanese took position in the mountains and The americans had to fight their way up, with over 12 thousand dieing, but after about 2 months they finally captured Okinawa.

With the Americans destroying every line of Defense germany had, Hitler knew he had lost and killed himself. Several days later Germany accepted their defeat and did a unconditional surrender. This day was called V-E day which was for "victory of Europe".
