Kitty Genovese

3:20am

Mar 13, 1964

28 year-old, Catherine (Kitty) Genovese, was coming home from her job as a bar manager- like every other night. Kitty parked her car outside the shop fronts (her apartment was above the shops), and walked the short distance to the building. The entrance was at the back, and Kitty noticed a man near the apartment building. She decided to call the police, and began the journey to the street's phone box.

3:25am

She got to the street light, when the man grabbed her- she screamed, causing the lights to go on in the apartment and people to look out at what was happening. Kitty yelled that she had been stabbed, before a man called down to the attacker to leave the girl alone. The attacker merely shrugged his shoulders and began walking to his car.

3:35am

Mar 13, 1964

After the lights were out once again, the attacker returned to Kitty, who was trying to get to the apartment entrance at the back of the building. The man stabbed her again, and Kitty began screaming that she was dying. The apartment lit up again and people came to see what was happening. The attacker got in his car and drove away. A bus went past as Kitty staggered to her feet.

3:50am

The attacker returned by the time Kitty has made her way to the back of the apartment, he checked each set of doors, until he found her slumped against a set of stairs- where he stabbed Kitty for a third time- fatally,

3:55am

Only after Kitty was stabbed three times, was the first call to the police made. They arrived after two minutes. The man who contacted the police only did so after a long time of deliberation and callling for advice from a friend.

4:25am

Mar 13, 1964

It was 4:25am when Kitty's body was taken from the scene. Only after the ambulance had left, did people start to come out of the apartment.

Arrest

Mar 19, 1964

Six days after the murder, Winston Moseley, aged 29, was arrested by police. Married with two children, this home-owner had no previous record.

Admitted to psychiatric ward

Mar 20, 1964

The court commited Moseley to a hospital psychiatric ward the same week. When questioned by police, Kitty's killer also admitted to killing two other women- even though another man had already confessed to the killing. The police say they could have saved Kitty's life, had one of the thirt-eight witnesses contacted police.
