Polkinghorne's first publication (jointly with R.J. Eden, P.V. Landshoff and D.I. Olive) centered around physics. It covered what was known about the Feyman integrals in terms of their analytic and high energy properties.

Polkinghorne resigned as professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Cambridge to pursue theological studies.

Deciding that he had done his part for science after 25 years, Polkinghorne decided to train for Priesthood which started in 1977 and ended up with him becoming ordained on the 6th of June, 1982. The ceremony was held at Trinity College, Cambridge where he stayed for five years before leaving and subsequently returning in 1986 as dean of the chapel at Trinity Hall.

Published The Way the World Is in 1983. This was first of several works he published that covered the relationship between science and religion. He is internationally recognized for his contribution in combining theology and science.

John Polkinghorne was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for distinguished service to science, religion, learning and medical ethics.
