    Who is John Polkinghorne
    Polkinghorne was an English physicist and an Anglican priest. He was born in Weston-super-Mare England and lived until he was 91 years old.
  • Education

    Polkinghorne earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1952 and in 1955 a master’s degree. One year later he earned a doctorate in quantum field theory and then another doctorate in theoretical elementary particle physics in 1974.
  • Career

    Career
    Polkinghorne started as a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh in 1956, and then in Cambridge in 1698 until he became a professor. After resigning as a professor in 1978 he joined the seminary and later came back to Cambridge in 1986 as Dean of Trinity Hall, then president of Queens College in 1989. He finally retired again in 1996 and was even knighted in 1997 by Queen Elizabeth II.

    Mathematical Models Recognized
    Quarks were discovered by Murray Gell-man, and Polkinghorne's team helped make them understandable with their models. Polkinghorne and his team made mathematical models that showed patterns if there were quarks.
  • Templeton Prize

    Templeton Prize
    In 2002 Polkinghorne was awarded the Templeton prize. The Templeton prize is for those who "advance Sir John Templeton's philanthropic vision: harnessing the power of sciences to explore the deepest questions of the universe and humankind's place and purpose within it" (Templeton Prize 2022).
