Nicholas Shanley and Frances Kelly Shanley were Shanley's parents. His mother worked as a telephone operator, and his father was a meat-packer.

Shanley had a rough start academically as he was on academic probation but ultimately graduated from New York University as Valedictorian in 1977, with a degree in Educational Theatre. Shanley was enlisted in the Marine Coprs for one year stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He witnessed very terrible things related to the Vietnam War.

This play won the Obie Award and the Theatre World Award in 1983. The 2024 revival was nominated for the Drama League Awards.

Shanley wrote 1983 and debuted that same year in June at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea was revived in 2004 and production continued at the Second-Stage Theatre off-Broadway. Revived once again in 2023 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.

In 2004, Shanley was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame for his success as a playwright, director, screenwriter, and connection to the Bronx Community.

In 2005, Doubt: A Parable won a grand total of 11 Tony Awards and was nominated for 4 other awards in the same year.

After it's debut at the Manhattan Theatre Club, production continued at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway with a grand total of 525 performances and 25 previews. There began a revival of the play in early February of 2024 and ended late April of 2024.

Shanley was the commencement speaker at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York.

Outside Mullingar was nominated for two 2014 Outer Critics Circle Award nominations, for Outstanding New Broadway Play and Outstanding Actor in a Play (Brían F. O’Byrne).
The play received two 2014 Drama Desk Award nominations: Outstanding Play and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play (Peter Maloney).
The play received one 2014 Tony Award nomination, for Best Play. -

Kansas' William Inge Center for the Arts is honoring playwright John Patrick Shanley with the William Inge Distinguished Achievement in the American Theatre Award.
Shanley received the award at the 42nd annual Inge Theatre Festival at Independence Community College April 17-19th.
