    With his first wife, Alice, Dewey traveled to Japan giving 200 lectures. His influence became international during the 1920s after living in China for over 2 years where they called him "Mr. Democracy" and "Mr. Science". This influence also got Chinese educators to try to encourage creativity and virtue in students.
