the grand tour was a traditional trip around Europe done by upper-class men mainly British young men. The Grand Tour started in the late 16th century but became more popular in the 17th and 18th century. -
Spa Towns are places built around natural mineral water that are believed to have healed many things. Many visited these towns to take the water to drink for there heath or bath. The most famous Spa Town is Bath which was built by the romans. -
In the early 1800, beach resorts would only cater to the wealthy as the seaside air was seen as good for your health. With all the visitors small towns turned into large towns with hotels, more visitors and growth of transport. Beach resorts also used entertainment to attract many people such as theatres and music halls, however as beach resorts grew bigger they increased entertainment with bigger dance halls and zoos. Blackpool was one of the major destinations as they catered to working class. -
In the 1840s, railways helped tourism grow by providing faster and cheaper ways to travel, feeling more comfortable when travelling and taking people to new seaside resorts that have opened which are away from the city centers. Railways also allowed many families to take day trips and learning a new culture. However, these would include package holidays provided by many companies mainly by Thomas Cook. -
The rise of holiday camps was due to affordable leisure for many working class families. Billy Butlins opened the his camp in 1936 in Skegness which offered families all-inclusive meals and accommodation.
The fall of holiday camps began in late 1970s as aboard package holidays began popular which caused families to not visit seaside destinations within Britain. -
After WWII there were major economic and social change were living standards improved, the way people worked and industries modernized began to change. There was increase in paid holidays where workers were given paid annual leave which was mainly 1-2 weeks a year. They introduced shorter working hours which was around 48 hours to 40 hours. Families were also given a more disposable income allowing them to spend money on leisure activities including the cinema, eating out and holidays abroad. -
this was the beginning of mass market package tourism turning normal holidays into a luxury holiday for the wealthy then into affordable holidays every family can do. Companies such as Thomas cook son would provide flights, accommodation, meals and transfers in an all-inclusive package. after WWII the workers has more income which meant they could afford abroad holidays instead of local trips. -
1983 is considered the year modern internet began. Internet started being used in companies, universities and government organizations. -
1997 was seen as a transformational year for lower cost airlines. This was good as any airline could fly any route within the EU and had flexible pricing as the airlines could set there own fares. Ryanair was transformed into a low cost airline in 1997 which included fast turnovers, charging separately for extras and offering low headline fares. -
In July 2018 the UK came out with new laws called Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. These were set in place so more people could book online and customers could combine separate flights, hotels and car hire.
