Chinese Head Tax
Was created in 1885 and was made to discourage the immigration of Chinese people. This was because white people feared the thought of Asian people taking over the jobs of the white people. The tax was $50 on all Chinese immigrants entering Canada. -
Komagata Maru Incident
The Komagata Maru was a ship that brought economic immigrants to Vancouver from India. They were denied access due to the exclusion law set by Canada to keep Asian immigrants out. The immigrants stayed at the docks for two months until they were forced to leave in July. -
Internment of Ukrainian Canadians
The Internment of Ukrainian Canadians Started In 1914 When Canadas government started to Intern Ukrainian Canadians In WW1. This was do to the fact that Canada found anyone that wasn't of Canadian decent to be an "enemy alien". They these people in internment camps were they lived through WW1. -
Internment of Italian Canadians
The Internment of Italian Canadians started because in WW2 the Italians were thought of as enemy aliens. This resulted in thousands of people being interned in internment camps. People who were not interned in these camps were boycotted against in their communities. -
Internment of Japanese Canadians
The internment of Japanese Canadians started when they were declared enemy aliens under the war measures act in December of 1941. On January 14, 1942 Canada passed an act that remove Japanese males from an are in BC and moved them to camps. Then on February 25 The Canadian Government said that Japanese immigrants were being moved for reasons of national security and were detained. They were all released by the end of 1945. -
Refugees being added as an immigration category
Leading up to June 4, 1969 refugees were not apart of any immigration acts. This change went mostly unnoticed and unreported in the media. This allowed refugees to immigrate to Canada legally when in times of need. -
Creation of immigration categories
The creation of immigration categories was a part of the immigration act of 1976. This created categories of immigrants who could come to Canada. These were refugees, families, assisted relatives, and independent immigrants. -
Immigration Act
The immigration act focused more on who should be let into the country instead of who should be kept out. It gave the provinces the ability to make their own immigration laws.This act also created alternatives to deportation for less serious offences for immigrants -
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
The immigration and refugee protection act came into affect in 2002 and replaced the Immigration act of 1976. It established four new categories being economic, family, refugees, and other immigrants. This allows Canada to boost their economy and select immigrants that Canada needs.
