Beginning his academics in physics he later switched to the history of science. After achieving his master's Thomas Kuhn then later obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

In 1957, Thomas Kuhn publishes his book known as "The Copernican Revolution. This novel dived into the revolution in which the idea of the universe shifted from the Earth being the center of all universal action to a broader and more expansive view of the universe. This novel can be viewed as a precursor in a sense to his future novel, on scientific revolutions as within this novel, Kuhn discusses the changes associated with the revolution and the schemes of science are constantly being replaced

In 1962 Thomas Kuhn published his book about the history of science. Within this book, Kuhn dives into and discusses the idea of paradigms and how they lead to the creation of scientific revolutions. The ideas presented in this book allowed the development of how we view the timeline in which new theories occur. The introduction of the "paradigm shift" revolutionized how we view the introduction of new theories by challenging the old theory of gradual change with one which occurs quickly.

In 1977, Thomas Kuhn wrote a collection of essays that came to be known as "The Essential Tension." In this collection of essays, Thomas Kuhn explores how agents that naturally compete come to act together as a group. In these essays, Kuhn argues a controversial concept which is that of multilevel selection.
