Oklahoma City Bombing
The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was located in downtown Oklahoma City. A truck loaded with around 4,800 pounds of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, fuel, and other chemicals was what caused this horrific event. The death count was 168. Which included 16 children who were in the daycare. There was over 600 people who were injured. Timothy McVeigh was the main perpetrate being anti government. Terry Nicholas helped him plan and prepare. This was a devastating event that took many innocent lives. -
President Bill Clinton is Impeached
Bill Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States. December 8, 1998 he was impeached by the House of Representatives for lying under oath. As well for obstructing justice. The house voted on two different articles of impeachment. One being he has committed perjury before a grand jury and the other being that he obstructed justice. February 12, 1999 Clinton was acquitted on both offenses. Bill Clinton was the second president to ever be impeached. -
9/11 Terrorist Attack
Tuesday, September 11, 2001 two planes stuck the World Trade Center in New York City. 8:46 am American Airlines flight 11 crashed into the North building. 9:03 am United Airlines flight 175 crashed into the South building. 9:37 American Airlines flight 77 hit the Pentagon. The terrorist group Al-Qaeda, who was led by Osama Bin Laden was the head of these attacks. Nearly 3,000 people were found dead and thousands more injured. "transformed the national security agenda"“Kruse and Zelizer 241). -
Department of Homeland Security is created
President George W. Bush signed the Homeland Security Act of 2002. The Department of Homeland Security was created due to the terrorists attacks on September 11, 2001. It was put in place to prevent terrorism and enhance security in America. This made many Americas fella little safer following the events of 9/11."The war of terror but also work to encourage readiness in the civilian population."(Kruse and Zelizer, ). I think this was a important event because it helped people feel safer. -
NASA Rovers Land on Mars
Spirit and Opportunity are the first two rovers to ever be on Mars. This was apart of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission. Spirit landed on January 3rd and Opportunity landed on January 25th. The mission had many goals. Such as test water activity, analyze the rocks and soil and get images of Mars. This was a huge win for the United States. They were able to find evidence of ancient water and ancient volcanic rocks. -
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina was a category 4. It effected the gulf coast, especially Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. New Orleans was most effected with it being below sea level. Over 2,000 people were killed and thousands others injured. It is the deadliest hurricane that has hit America. This was one of the costliest hurricanes in U.S history. There was over $100 billion in damage caused by this hurricane. -
Virginia Teach Shooting
On April 16 a student of Virginia Tech, Seung-Hui Cho, opened fire. He killed 33 people including himself. Cho had suffered many mental illnesses. In the middle of all of this he had mailed a manifesto to NBC News. It included photos of him holding mutable weapons and a DVD. This is one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history. Being a college student myself it is scary to think that this happened on a college campus and killed so many young people. -
Barack Obama Elected President
Barack Obama was the 44th President of the United States. He was the first African American President to ever be elected. His victory was historic, not only because of his racial background but as well his campaign. He set a message of hope and change. Something America needed at the time. He served two terms and made a large impact on the United States. I choose this because I think it is something very important in history and had an amazing impact on America. -
Death of Osama Bin Laden
Osama Bin Laden was the leader of the terrorist group who was responsible for the attack on 9/11. He was not only responsible for 9/11 but for many other terrorist attacks. The US had been looking for him for a decade. On May 2, 2011 US Navy Seals Team Six located Bin Laden in Afghanistan. After 40 minute raid, he was shot and killed. Americans celebrated this news and Obama said "Justice has been done". This is a major win for the US getting some sort of justice for the horrible events of 9/11. -
Same Sex Marriage Becomes Legal
Following the ruling of the Supreme Court case Obergefell vs Hodges, same sex marriage became legalized. The Courts ruling was that bans on same sex marriage was unconstitutional. This ruling required all states to recognize this. This was a huge turning point for so many people. Before this in many states it was not legalized. I think this is a very important turn in history because it showed that everyone is equal no matter what.
