The early NHL period was mired in controversy. The NHL started as an offshoot of the NHA (National Hockey League) when it suspended operations in 1917. The original teams consisted of the Montréal Canadians, Montréal Wanderers, Quebec Bulldogs, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Arenas. The object in the photo is the commemorative plaque dedicated in 2017 to the foundation of the NHL at the Windsor Hotel in Ontario Canada.

First Black Player Suits Up for Match
Willie O'Ree was the first player in NHL history to break the color barrier. This was a monumental step in making hockey and the NHL a sport for everyone to enjoy and spectate.
